SFA and America's Choice get mixed reviews. SFA is suppose to be adopted by a school with the teachers being on board. DCSS purchased it for the system and Atkinson assured SFA that teachers had agreed to the program. She lied. SFA asks that teachers who are not interested in their program be assigned to a different school. Atkinson did not do this.

I recall from the State BOE hearing that the [old] "Board" has "several" law firms on the payroll, has anyone uncovered a number to date? A list of those rainmakers? Any clue what all they are doing/not doing? The (other) number; meaning $$$ DCSD disburses on a ....(ugh)routine...basis to them...that should be a fun number to see! Humm, to think of the teachers who would not be furloughed, forced to pay their own health insurance subsidy, teacher retirement.....oh, and buildings that could be repaired! Ah! dreams are lovely.

There aren't 140 PTAs in DeKalb. Several schools don't have PTAs. I wonder how many. And at more than a handful of schools, there is virtually no way, other than fliers home, to reach most parents. And DCSS has eliminated the translators so many schools can't send things home in any other language than English.

Several of our volunteers spent several days driving around to every vacant property we could find -- DCSS (and that includes Wilkins) did not even have a list. Take a look at the Tax Commissioner's website which is what the DSW volunteers composed a list from.

@DIO, in some ways it does make sense to sell those idle properties. It reduces DCSD liability and as county school systems dont pay property tax, it will add to the tax base when bought by an investor/commercial entity. That would be a plus in addition to the relief of not having that property to maintain. (buildings and grounds, etc.) Ooops! Did my Real Estate agent self ooze out? :-/

Pat Pope told the Board that Hooper Alexander was worth 6 million dollars a few years ago and PAUL WOMACK ARGUED THAT THE PRICE WAS TOO LOW BECAUSE THE MARKET WAS SOFT. If anyone has been to that school/area it was never worth that much and the new appraisal showed that. So, many members of the board have been hesitant to sale.

@DIO Prolly wanted to wait for a "better price"...oh, I seriously bet there were offers on those properties, some are nestled within LOVELY neighborhoods where a fab sub division could spring forth! Yes, investors may offer less now than 10 yrs. ago, but they pay for the sale and they pay TAX after the sale and the homes are taxed per the house price! There is always going to be the urge to "wait and see if we can get a higher price". Selling is the smart choice, re-furb on those old circa1960 buildings? Not smart. Can you say asbestos? (the floor tiles) Nancy should have left them her calculator.

Milner may be great, but they cannot rely on "walking around" to get real answers -- not with an administration filled with bullies. And, it is hard to know whether the copiers are really working given that the funds for copying paper are going to pay for the Palace bloat.

@Kim Gokce Thanks for that insight. What I'm trying to gauge here is if the we're entering into a new dynamic. Which, is what the Governor paved the way for. To me, the new board members seem very articulate, concerned, and business-minded. Are they concerned about the kids...you bet. But order must be brought to the "business" as well. Sure - things are troubled in the DCSS - but is the administration now realizing that things are going to be different. I don't expect anything groundbreaking in THIS meeting. If it wasn't implemented correctly in the first place, what are they going to do improve implementation? Why aren't teachers being questioned? Teachers know more than the principals from my experience about what the kids need.

Good point Kim Gokce! Tax dollars are allotted on "current" enrollment. So, we get buildings too late. :( Once monies are there, bids are in,building starts... ....the buildings being built for whatever school is already too small. Sad, but true! Kim, as a former teacher in DeKalb, too many have remained silent and frankly our children are suffering for the silence. I was often criticized for speaking out and I am sorry being in education one needs to not harm children intentionally. Knowing that something wasn't done correctly and remaining silent, hurt many kids even further. We have too many kids in DeKalb who don't have basic reading skills. NO program in the three years I taught in DeKalb was ever implemented properly. Teachers never had proper training. This is not new, but when is it going to stop. In my 15 years of teaching, the last 3 in DeKalb, I had the poorest teacher training, and I've worked in districts larger than DeKalb. Sorry, but I am tired of people passing the buck and saying there was nothing that they could do. When it comes to our children, we need people who are willing to do the right thing, even when it might mean that you will lose your job.

Nancy can do what ever she wants/is comfy with in Ga. politics IMO. I am believer. I made the comments only because I know so much of the ick we are dealing with is from our legislators who do not put kids first often enough-that is. So...then we have boards who toy with that legislation....to the point we are at now. Long road to recovery, but we have all learned a great lesson in what constituency is all about! DeKalb School Watch:
The primary issue was not "funding" the rollout. It was obtaining an 80% buy-in by teachers in each school. The reality is that it would have taken some time, but it was Howe's responsibility. Those schools that did not get at least an 80% buy in needed to not be included in SFA. But, as you will see if you read Atkinson's dissertation on SFA (which, BTW, reached two separate conclusions about SFA, one pro and one con) -- and seeing that she was readily hired by SFA after abandoning her job with DCSS -- a low # of schools with an 80% or more buy-in was unacceptable to whatever deal Atkinson had cut with SFA, even though it worked for the very different and varied needs in DCSS. Remember -- Howe was "too busy" to confirm that ordered and paid for textbooks were actually received. Howe was too busy with CYA and generally coering in her office, instead of looking out for the kids who were counting on her.

We have had so many programs in the last few years. I suggest a ten year hiatus on programs , giving us time to absorb all the new ideas, share what works, and implement new strategies @ no additional cost. I'd offer to help mentor new teachers, again @ no cost to the county. I'm sure other teachers would join me, just to keep Dekalb from spending more money on a quick fix idea.
