I recently pulled the end of year (6/30) Financial Reports provided to the DeKalb BOE by the district from FY2008 through FY2012. I pulled the salary categories and input the reported actual expenditures in a spreadsheet for those years. For the FY2013, I used our budget as an approximation of what we’ll spend on salaries for the current fiscal year. Here’s my spreadsheet:
Note: General Admin is the only salary component that has increased over 6 years

Hey Nancy – thanks for posting. 1) What event, or phenomenon, occurred to justify a 24% increase in the FY 2009 budget? 2) What’s the Superintendent’s explanation for the > 14% increase of General Admin salaries in 2013?

Nancy, are there any benchmarks out there that would tell us what the ratio “should be” when comparing school and general admin costs to instructional salaries?

Thank you very much for analyzing the salary data. I cannot think of any credible explanation for the trends your analysis showed.
What can we do about this? How do we reverse this trend? Do we speak at Board meetings? Do we ask the Board members who have served since 2008? Do we ask the Superintendent?

Thanks for posting this, Nancy. As a DeKalb educator, I am continually saddened and outraged by the dwindling support of teachers and of our classroom resources. It’s really nice to see a board member showing their support for the classroom! As all parents and teachers already know, the people who really suffer for these kinds of financial disparities are our children. DeKalb County should be ashamed of their use of public funds.
